What is the Rambler House Car? Free Escalade Rides for Residents

By Bella

Have you ever checked your bank account at the end of a semester and wondered where it all went? Or added up what you actually spend just getting around Tempe: the parking permit, the insurance bill that hits every month whether you drove or not, the $9 Ubers home from Mill Ave that somehow turn into $90?

If you’re a student, you know that getting around is non-negotiable. Between classes, game days, grocery runs and a packed social calendar, transportation quietly becomes one of the biggest line items in a college budget.

That’s exactly the problem Rambler Tempe set out to solve with its new House Car, a complimentary black car service that’s changing how residents get around Tempe.

In this article, you’ll see how the House Car works, what it costs (spoiler: nothing) and what having one downstairs could save you over a semester. We’ll also answer commonly asked questions, like:

1. What is the Rambler House Car?

Two black Cadillac SUVs are parked side by side on a wet street in front of a modern, multi-story building with large windows and palm trees, under a partly cloudy sky at sunset.

The Rambler House Car is an all-electric 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ that’s complimentary for Rambler residents. No fare, no app fees, no surge pricing. It’s included in living here. And this isn’t a campus shuttle running on a schedule. It’s a black car service: you text, and an Escalade shows up.

The House Car can take you anywhere within a 5-mile radius of Rambler, and you’re welcome to bring friends along. That radius covers a lot: ASU’s Tempe campus, Mill Avenue, Tempe Marketplace, and pretty much every spot on our lists of the best brunch near ASU and top restaurants near campus.

2. How Does the House Car Work?

Requesting a ride is simple:

  • Text or call the House Car line and we’ll send a car based on availability, first-come, first-served
  • Hours: 9 AM – 7 PM on weekdays, and 9 AM – 9 PM on weekends
  • Range: anywhere within 5 miles of Rambler
  • Friends welcome: you don’t have to ride solo

No downloading another app, no linking a credit card. Just text, hop in and let the all-electric Escalade do the rest.

3. How Much Could the House Car Save Me?

This is the question worth sitting with, because the honest answer surprises most students (and most parents).

AAA’s most recent Your Driving Costs study puts the average cost of owning and operating a new vehicle at $11,577 per year — about $965 a month once you factor in depreciation, fuel, insurance, maintenance and finance charges.

“But my car is paid off.” Fair. Strip out the car payment entirely and the numbers are still real:

  • Insurance: college-age drivers average around $182/month for minimum coverage, often more in a city
  • Parking: ASU student permits run roughly $210–$780 per year depending on how close to campus you want to be
  • Gas: AAA pegs fuel at about 13 cents per mile, so call it $60–$80/month for typical around-town driving

Add that up over a fall semester and even a paid-off car costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500–$2,000. That’s before a single oil change, parking ticket or surprise repair. With a car payment in the mix, you’re closer to $4,000+ per semester.

Relying on rideshare instead? Even modest Uber use, a few short trips a week at Tempe’s typical UberX rates, adds up to $500+ per semester. The House Car handles those same trips for free.

And because Rambler sits at 1020 E. Apache Blvd., a short walk from campus and the light rail, the “do I even need to bring a car to ASU?” math starts tipping fast. No permit, no insurance hike, no circling for parking before class. (And if you do bring a car, that’s what our on-site garage is for! See details in our FAQ.)

4. When Would I Use the House Car?

Honestly, more often than you’d think:

  • Game days: show up in a black car and skip the stadium parking chaos entirely
  • Brunch and nights out: pull up to Mill Ave with no designated-driver negotiations and no surge pricing
  • Grocery and Target runs: bring the haul home in an Escalade instead of an Uber trunk
  • Group plans: it seats your friends, and rides are first-come, first-served

Whether it’s brunch plans, game days, nights out or everything in between, the House Car turns a recurring expense into a perk that’s already included.

The House Car is the kind of perk you didn’t know came with a lease: a black car downstairs, ready when you are. It’s just one of the many amenities chosen to make your experience at Rambler that much better. And yes, it still saves you a couple thousand dollars a semester.
