Have you ever searched everywhere in your apartment for a charger, only to end up heading to class with your phone at 1%? Or you finally get to class, only to realize that your Airpods didn’t charge overnight?
If you’re a student, you know how frustrating it is to constantly chase a charge in a space that’s supposed to be convenient. Between classes, roommates and a packed schedule, the last thing you should be worrying about is whether your phone will make it through the day.
That’s exactly the problem Rambler Tempe set out to solve with its new FreePower wireless charging countertops, an innovation that’s changing how students power their devices at home.
In this article, you’ll see how this built-in technology works, what makes it different from traditional charging setups and what you need to know about compatibility, customization and everyday use. We’ll also answer commonly asked questions, like:

1. What is FreePower?

FreePower is a type of wireless charging built directly into surfaces like countertops, so instead of plugging your phone in, you can just set it down to start charging. Unlike typical wireless chargers where you have to line your phone up perfectly on a small pad, FreePower works across a larger area and can charge multiple devices at the same time.
In a place like Rambler Tempe, that means you don’t have to fight over outlets or keep track of chargers: your counter basically does all of the work for you.

A charging halo is the subtle marker on your counter surface that shows you where your device will charge. When it’s not in use, it usually just looks like a faint circle or design on the countertop.
Once you place your phone in that area, the halo lights up to show that your device is actively charging. It’s a quick visual cue so you know you hit the right spot without having to second guess it.
You don’t have to line up your phone perfectly inside the circle, but it does need to be within that area to work. Think of it like a “drop zone;” once your phone is in it and the light turns on, you’re good.
Your charging halo color is customizable. Using FreePower’s app, you can connect to your FreePower technology and choose from colors like elegant (white), sunrise (blue and orange), sunset (pink and orange) and calm (blue and purple), among others. The app also gives you control over your halo’s brightness, among other settings.
2. How Does FreePower Work?

FreePower works by sending energy from underneath the countertop to your device using electromagnetic fields. When your phone, or another compatible device, is placed on the surface within the charging halo it picks up that energy through a built-in coil and starts charging automatically.
Instead of relying on one small charging pad, FreePower uses a system of multiple coils under the surface to create a larger charging area. That’s why you don’t have to line your phone up perfectly. There’s more flexibility in where you place it, as long as it’s within the charging zone.
3. What Devices Can FreePower Charge?
FreePower works with any device that has Qi (“chee”) processors. This is just the technology that allows your device to wirelessly charge.
That means, if your Apple Watch, Samsung, Android or other device can charge with any wireless technology, it’ll work with FreePower. Some common examples include:
- Apple iPhones (iPhone 8 or newer)
- Samsung Galaxy phones (S6 and newer)
- Android OnePlus (8 Pro, 9 Pro, 10 Pro, 11)
- Motorola Edge Series (Edge+, Edge 30/40 Pro)
- Sony Xperia models
- Google Pixel phones (Pixel 3 and newer)
- Apple Airpods (with wireless charging cases)
- Samsung Galaxy Buds
